rode the Ten Thousand, deceived
into believing they had been set free
and maybe now had better things to do
and over their bodies the earth lay heavily
and all round slowly flowed the rust brown water
and skyward soared the tall buildings they had made
as monuments to the victories they had achieved
which no one could remember any more.
