Tom, I live in the state that borders Kashmir and still I'm quite sure I get second-hand, fudged accounts to read. Worse, I work in the media myself, and there seems to be this uneasiness to go around when the issue of Kashmir comes up. It has such a complicated history which has been tampered and torn apart to the extent that everyone has his or her own truths to go along with. Social media has only made it worse. The people of Kashmir, I'm afraid, have no chance. The State always wins, as someone said. There are plenty of freedoms to be had, but a lot more to be killed, I guess. And the world seems in a hurry to do just that.

If instead of being hanged by the neck
	you’re thrown inside
	for not giving up hope
in the world, your country, and people,
	if you do ten or fifteen years
	apart from the time you have left,
you won’t say,
“Better I had swung from the end of a rope
						like a flag” --
you’ll put your foot down and live.
It may not be a pleasure exactly,
but it’s your solemn duty
	to live one more day
			to spite the enemy.
Part of you may live alone inside,
		like a stone at the bottom of a well.
But the other part
	must be so caught up
	in the flurry of the world
             that you shiver there inside
     when outside, at forty days’ distance, a leaf moves.
To wait for letters inside,
to sing sad songs,
or to lie awake all night staring at the ceiling
                              is sweet but dangerous.
Look at your face from shave to shave,
forget your age,
watch out for lice
                       and for spring nights,
       and always remember
              to eat every last piece of bread --
also, don’t forget to laugh heartily.
And who knows,
the woman you love may stop loving you.
Don’t say it’s no big thing:

Just over a month into Syria’s uprising in 2011, the leader of Lebanon’s Druze sect, Walid Jumblatt, travelled to Damascus to visit Syria’s then security tsar, Mohammed Nasif. As well as being the Assad family’s most trusted senior official, he was also the linchpin of Syria’s close ties with Iran and Hezbollah, a man bound more than most to the fate of the regime.

“He said to me at the time, it’s either us, meaning the Alawites, or them, meaning the Sunnis,” Jumblatt recalled. “I knew which way this was going then.

He added, ‘even if it cost us a million dead’.”

More than five years later, the toll in the now raging war is well past a quarter of that estimate -- international monitors stopped counting last August. The sectarian dimension to the fighting foreshadowed by Nasif is a reality. So is the destruction of much of the country, including the ancient city of Aleppo, which after years of being viewed as the key to Syria’s fate last week slipped from the grasp of the opposition and into the hands of the Syrian regime’s allies, led by Hezbollah.

The encirclement of Aleppo is a significant moment in a war that has led to more unrestrained savagery, international repercussions and unlikely alliances than most others in modern times. Another emerged last week, as Hezbollah and Syrian troops were beating back the al-Qaida-aligned Jabhat al-Nusra from farmlands to the north of the city. As that battle raged, the US was drafting a deal with Russia that would create a joint operations centre to coordinate attacks on al-Nusra and Islamic State.

The move has created despair among the ranks of the Syrian opposition, which insists that a pact between Moscow and Washington will entrench the Syrian leader, whom Russia and Iran have saved from defeat over the past 12 months. Adding to the alarm of the now diminished rebel ranks is a detente, also signed during the week, between Moscow and Ankara, after a seven-month standoff, as well as the Turkish prime minister’s remarks that Ankara was interested in peace with Damascus.

“This all means that Assad is no longer at risk,” said a senior official in the western-backed Syrian opposition. “This means that he has won.”

In the eyes of the exiled political opposition and rebel fighting groups still in Syria, the political realignments mark a decisive phase in a war that they believe they can no longer win. In recent years, as Bashar al-Assad’s allies have weakened the rebels’ position, a belief endured among opposition military leaders that if they could not win the war, Assad could not either. That view has changed.

“I’m sitting here in a ruined house in eastern Aleppo,” said Abu Sobhi Jumail, a Syrian opposition fighter who has fought across northern Syria for the past five years. “I have the Russians in the skies, the Syrian air force too, when its planes can fly. I have Isis to my east, Hezbollah to my north and al-Qaida [Jabhat al-Nusra] in between. They abandon us, and tell us to rely on God, and then condemn us when we are forced to seek help [from al-Nusra]. Without them we would all have been killed a year ago. That is not politics. That is life and death.”

Since Russia launched its large-scale intervention last October, opposition units that had been backed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the US have been the prime targets of Moscow’s bombers. Isis has largely been spared, with notable exceptions such as in Palmyra.

Turkey, too, has mostly left the jihadis alone, concentrating its fight on Syria’s Kurds, whom it views as a subversive extension of Turkish Kurdish groups, which Ankara continues to fight.

Though remaining a supporter of the Syrian opposition, including Islamic elements such as Ahrar al-Sham, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has focused much of his energies on ensuring that Syria’s Kurds do not seize control of more of the shared border and that their use by the US as proxies in the fight to seize land from Isis in eastern Syria does not amplify the Kurds’ ambitions.

“We are doomed in Aleppo,” said Suleiman Aboud, who fled with his family from the rebel east of the city in February. “The next phase of this will be revenge. No one has paid a price for all these abuses. That is what hugging Assad does. This revolution was noble. It may not have been fully democratic, but people are allowed to fight oppression. We have the same rights to safety and freedom as you.”

Acknowledging the immense suffering across rebel-held parts of the country, Gareth Bayley, the UK’s special envoy for Syria, said: “The situation on the ground in Syria is dire. The UK is deeply concerned by the regime and its allies taking ground and harming civilians in Aleppo and rural Damascus. This is in direct violation of the cessation of hostilities and there is appalling suffering amongst the population.”

There is no way out of eastern Aleppo and north to the Turkish border, with the last remaining supply line severed. A blockade that has all but taken hold over the past year is now likely to be enforced, say the few remaining residents of the eastern half of the city.

“For a long time people have been out of ideas,” said Abu Subhi. “There is no enthusiasm to assist us. They want it all to go away. But you will all be judged for what has happened in Syria. I won’t be alive to witness it, though.”

One white-washed, straw-thatched little cottage nestling under the shadow of Doon Rock
Is the only sign of human habitation. A narrow, rutty road leads across the bog to the Well.

It makes more evident the loneliness of the spot, for it seems to remind
That there is a beyond, a place of life, of noise, of rush.
This long white streak unites Doon with the outside world. ...

The outside world, that's where we are. Were we ever elsewhere?

Those in mother's parish circle who suffered the most grievous afflictions

Returned from pilgrimages to the holy wells of Ireland imbued with a fresh distillation

Of holiness. The women would gather in each other's living rooms and say

Rosaries over and over, holding the beads aloft with cancer-weakened arms.

Ablutions, dipping in the waters, washing the afflicted parts with a cloth,

Tying the wet washcloth to a branch. The rag disintegrated over time,
The ailment was supposed to fade away as well. Also circumambulation, circling
Of the well a set number of times and making an offering of a coin, pin or stone.

A friend died recently after "a long struggle with...". This friend was equally

A believer, though of a faith nothing like my mother's. Still his devotion to prayer

And to the ritual iteration of the articles of his belief proved his great strength in his going.
Miracle cures obsessed the good women in my mother's parish circle.
Lourdes was a common destination for devout pilgrims with terminal illnesses.

I marveled at the strength of my friend. The believer. He retained his generous sense of humour

The nimble lightness and thoughtfulness till...

A curtain comes down. Nobody ever really believes they are going to die,

Else how would it be possible to draw one more breath,

Until... and then they do. I don't know if people believe in miracle cures any more.

The women in my mother's parish circle prayed in a group. They met in one another's living rooms

And said the rosary with hands holding the beads aloft strung across both extended arms

And the murmuring susurrations of this group of women as they prayed

Contained as I then guessed all the accumulated woes and hardships of their several lives

In which grief and illness and habits of pinching and scrimping were general and constant

But nobody complained, everything was given up for and suffered on behalf of

The Poor Souls, and of course the Poor Souls would never know

So there were really never any perceptible returns upon all this athletic investment

Of prayer on the part of these in fact no longer young women,

And anyway profit even spiritual profit even profit for the Poor Souls

Never played a part, was never a part of anyone's motive, in fact would have ruined

Everything. One another's company would have to have been the gain,

The communal benefit of shared company as one would have to suppose

Rather than actually remember, the actual memory is like an old photo
Scratched and marred by years of handling, so that what one most notices now

Are the marks of damage and decomposition, in which sense every old photo

Is also a photo of death, for nothing in it is alive any more, and knowing this

Ought to make one feel sad in looking, and sometimes that does happen

But more often now the mind is merely a clouded window upon...

So that the nights go by and... no praying and... no miracle cure so...

Townland: DOON

Description: Doon Well consists of a modern, enclosing wall from which steps lead down to a spring well. Nearby is a sapling to which are attached mementoes of the cures sought at the well. The area was landscaped in 2006 (SMR file). Kinahan (1889, 284) records the following regarding Doon rock: 'Its modern fame is said to be due to Fathers Freel and Gallagher, who, after being in foreign parts for many years, returned about two hundred years ago to this country, and blessed the adjoining well, since which time it is much resorted to by pilgrims in the summer and autumn, the waters curing cripples, sore eyes, and various other ailments; while water carried from the well, and sprinkled on the crops, stops the potato disease, blight in corn, and various other disasters. Of late years, the number of pilgrims have so much increased that a public road has been made into the well.’ It was described by Ó Muirgheasa in 1936: 'Doon Well, beside Doon Rock, and not far from Kilmacrenan, is now the most frequented Holy Well in Tirconaill, though one of the youngest -- if popular tradition speaks true -- as its origin is ascribed to Lector O'Friel. Local tradition says he is buried in Kilmacrenan old graveyard, and a white stone in the wall over the grave marks the spot. There is no special feast day or season for this pilgrimage. Prayers to be said at the well: Our Father and Hail Mary (five times) and Creed for your Intention. Same for every bottle of water you take. Our Father and Hail Mary for Father Friel who found it. Same for Father Gallagher who blessed it. Same for the man who put shelter around it"' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, No. 81, 155-6).

Description: Doon Rock is traditionally believed to be the inauguration site of the O'Donnells. In some respects, it can be said to resemble an inland promontory fort. It consists of a natural mound of rock somewhat oval in plan c. 150m N-S and c. 75m E-W. It rises dramatically from the surrounding wet land and is naturally defensive.

Situation in Aleppo “devastatingand overwhelming” says ICRC’s most senior official in Syria: International Committee of the Red Cross news release, 21 July 2016

Damascus/Geneva: The head of delegation for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Syria says heavy and indiscriminate shelling around the city of Aleppo is causing untold numbers of civilian casualties. Marianne Gasser said that every neighbourhood of the city had come under fire during the past few days and that vital infrastructure was being repeatedly hit.

"The situation is devastating and overwhelming. We hear that dozens of civilians are being killed every day and scores more injured from shells, mortars and rockets. The bombing is constant. The violence is threatening hundreds of thousands of people's lives, homes and livelihoods,' said Ms Gasser, who is in Aleppo.

The past few days have seen water systems, hospitals, warehouses, ambulance stations, public buildings and civilian homes destroyed or damaged on all sides of the front lines. Patients and medical workers have been killed or injured. Doctors and medical staff are working with no respite to cope with the influx of casualties, while many damaged hospitals no longer function. Many of the injured or chronically ill cannot reach health centres, while entire civilian areas are being cut off from the goods and services essential for their survival.

There has been a dramatic rise in emergency trauma cases in hospitals during the past few days. Civilians on all sides are struggling to find shelter, food and medical care. The ICRC, along with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, are working flat out to provide relief and restore or maintain vital services, but are having difficulty reaching many areas because of the violence.

"No adult, let alone child, should have to live through this. People are trying to survive in the most desperate of circumstances. All parties to the conflict, and all those with influence over them, must stop ignoring the laws of war. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected," said Ms Gasser.

Jerusalem this week is debating the lines of a dead Palestinian poet, his words again at the forefront of what is acceptable and not in Israel.

On Thursday, Israel’s new bombastic defense minister, Avigdor Lieberman, blasted Army Radio -- a sort of Israeli NPR -- for discussing on its “University on the Air” program the works of poet Mahmoud Darwish, who died in 2008.

Lieberman compared the station’s airing of the poem to the "glorification of the literary marvels of Adolf Hitler's 'Mein Kampf.'"

Though he toiled for a time as a bar bouncer in Moldova before immigrating from the Soviet satellite to Israel, Lieberman was a student of Russian literature, the son of a dissident writer, who dreamed as a young man of being a poet himself, according to his biographers.

Israeli media reported that Lieberman brought Army Radio chief Yaron Dekel into a meeting for a dressing-down. Israel’s attorney general told Lieberman to back off.Darwish was regarded as one of Palestinians' national poets. His works are taught in Israeli high school classes.

The new defense minister was especially upset about the last lines of Darwish's 1964 poem, “ID Card”.

The two men trudged on, side by side, in silence, full three miles. Suddenly, Bradley turned to retrace his course. Instantly, Riderhood turned likewise, and they went back side by side.

Bradley re-entered the Lock House. So did Riderhood. Bradley sat down in the window. Riderhood warmed himself at the fire. After an hour or more, Bradley abruptly got up again, and again went out, but this time turned the other way. Riderhood was close after him, caught him up in a few paces, and walked at his side.

This time, as before, when he found his attendant not to be shaken off, Bradley suddenly turned back. This time, as before, Riderhood turned back along with him. But, not this time, as before, did they go into the Lock House, for Bradley came to a stand on the snow-covered turf by the Lock, looking up the river and down the river. Navigation was impeded by the frost, and the scene was a mere white and yellow desert.

'Come, come, Master,' urged Riderhood, at his side. 'This is a dry game. And where's the good of it? You can't get rid of me, except by coming to a settlement. I am a going along with you wherever you go.'

Without a word of reply, Bradley passed quickly from him over the wooden bridge on the lock gates. 'Why, there's even less sense in this move than t'other,' said Riderhood, following. 'The Weir's there, and you'll have to come back, you know.'

Without taking the least notice, Bradley leaned his body against a post, in a resting attitude, and there rested with his eyes cast down. 'Being brought here,' said Riderhood, gruffly, 'I'll turn it to some use by changing my gates.' With a rattle and a rush of water, he then swung-to the lock gates that were standing open, before opening the others. So, both sets of gates were, for the moment, closed.

'You'd better by far be reasonable, Bradley Headstone, Master,' said Riderhood, passing him, 'or I'll drain you all the dryer for it, when we do settle. -- Ah! Would you!'

Bradley had caught him round the body. He seemed to be girdled with an iron ring. They were on the brink of the Lock, about midway between the two sets of gates.

'Let go!' said Riderhood, 'or I'll get my knife out and slash you wherever I can cut you. Let go!'

Bradley was drawing to the Lock-edge. Riderhood was drawing away from it. It was a strong grapple, and a fierce struggle, arm and leg. Bradley got him round, with his back to the Lock, and still worked him backward.

'Let go!' said Riderhood. 'Stop! What are you trying at? You can't drown me. Ain't I told you that the man as has come through drowning can never be drowned? I can't be drowned.'

'I can be!' returned Bradley, in a desperate, clenched voice. 'I am resolved to be. I'll hold you living, and I'll hold you dead. Come down!'

Riderhood went over into the smooth pit, backward, and Bradley Headstone upon him.

When the two were found, lying under the ooze and scum behind one of the rotting gates, Riderhood's hold had relaxed, probably in falling, and his eyes were staring upward. But, he was girdled still with Bradley's iron ring, and the rivets of the iron ring held tight.
