Carbon emissions highest in 66 million years, since dinosaur age
: image via Reuters World @
ReutersWorld, 21 March 2016

The sire then shook the honours from his head
beneath the remembered or imagined foot lights
where infant punks in buskins their tender voices try --
wonders of the 1965 Wellington stage! --
they had been accumulating there, wreathed
with cobweb meanwhile, for nothing at all,
the whole minstrelsy kit
my warbling lute, the lute I whilom strung
when to King John of Portugal I sung,
for example. But now... damp brows
and oblivion in the potting shed.

     In your day, just saying
Ben Jonson appeared on stage in socks, understandably
distracted, my handsome thespian...
I know how he felt... total bunny rabbit to thy crimson satin
all human things are subject to decay
     But thou
And thou -- the common fate of all things rare
maybe not so much, O sweet and fair.
How small a part of time we've shared really
when you come to think of it.
One half century lost in the vastness, not so long.
Obscurity pretty much just happens to people
because the world is not charged up
with the grandeur of original dawg any more.
Still something shines through, shook foil
moments of slippage through the ooze
albeit within the larger web of emissions.
Thanks very much for that. It was awesome.
But... is this it?

Josephine Miles: Tally

After her pills the girl slept and counted
Pellet on pellet the regress of life.
Dead to the world, the world's count yet counted
Pellet on pill the antinomies of life.

Refused to turn, the way's back, she counted
Her several stones across the mire of life.
And stones away and sticks away she counted
To keep herself out of the country of life.

Lost tally. How the sheep return to home
Is the story she will retrieve
And the only story believe
Of one and one the sheep returning home

To take the shapes of life,
Coming and being counted.

Josephine Miles (1911-1985): Tally from Collected Poems 1930-1983 (1983)

Yisrael "Slim" Katz (middle) has said that Belgians spend too much time eating chocolate, rather than fighting terrorism: photo by Menahem Kahana via Huffington Post, 23 March 2016

That crass Katz critique: Peter Beaumont from Brussels, The Guardian, 23 March 2016

Israel’s minister of transport, intelligence and atomic energy has delivered a harsh critique of Belgian anti-terrorism strategy shortly after co-ordinated attacks claimed by Isis that left at least 31 people dead.

In jarring and unsympathetic language, Yisrael Katz declared in an interview on Israel Radio: “If in Belgium they continue to eat chocolate and enjoy the good life with their liberalism and democracy, and do not understand that some of the Muslims there are planning terror, they will never be able to fight against them.”

Katz’s crass remarks came amid a flurry of columns in the Israeli media and remarks by security experts, criticising the European strategy against Isis, barely 24 hours since the deadly attacks -- and with a large element of victim blaming.

Also joining in was former Mossad director Shabtai Shavit, who echoed Katz’s remarks, although in moderately less inflammatory language, blaming the attacks on Belgium’s “laid-back culture” in a country he described as “ultra-liberal, that exists with no governability”.

“It is human nature to react only after large-scale disasters. An example is the September 11 terror attacks in New York. But immediately after the terror attack in New York, the US came to its senses and carried out extensive reforms, of a scope that it had not carried out since the end of the cold war. Homeland security in the US today, from the aspects of budgets and manpower, is the largest ministry in the US cabinet. They also upgraded their law enforcement and intelligence systems by the same degree.

“The European Union, in numbers, has more residents that the US. It could be that the disaster that befell them yesterday will finally wake them up. Isis succeeded in discerning, very well, the soft underbelly of western Europe. And that is Brussels, Belgium, a country that is ultra-liberal, that exists with no governability. It has had a transition government for years because it is impossible to form a real government. It is a country that is madeup of three ethnic groups with three languages, French, Flemish and German. It is a country in which the people don’t know how to communicate with each other because of the language problems.

“There is a general laid-back culture. So the bad guys discerned this, and slowly but steadily, set up base there. They found fertile ground for building a base of helpers from their own people and religion. The Muslim quarters in Brussels are quarters that the police will not enter. In short, that is the situation today. And to get out of it, and this is not just Belgium, Europe has to come to its senses and to decide that this is a number one priority. Belgium is not on its own. We saw that it was a terrorist from Belgium who carried out the terror attack in France.”

Katz’s remarks were immediately condemned by Israeli opposition figures. “The government has devised a system to eradicate terrorism: stop eating chocolate,” opposition MK Shelly Yachimovich tweeted.

For his part, the Zionist Union leader, Isaac Herzog, said: “Stop this contemptible talk. Where did you get the chutzpah to degrade innocent victims of terror? Where do you get this miserable cynicism from? This is a distortion of the most basic human morality. This is a painful moment internationally that obligates all people to identify with the bereaved families, whoever they are, and wish the wounded a speedy recovery.”

Suppressing criticism of Zionism on campus is catastrophic censorship

Suppressing criticism of Zionism on campus is catastrophic censorship: Saree Makdisi and Judith Butler, Los Angeles Times, 23 March 2016

Carefully adorned in the language of moderation and tolerance, the final report of the UC regents working group on principles against intolerance is a thinly disguised attempt to suppress academic freedom and stifle open debate on our campuses.

The report presents itself as the solution to a problem that it is actually helping to manufacture. Its point of departure is the unfounded claim that “manifestations of anti-Semitism have changed and that expressions of anti-Semitism are more coded and difficult to identify.” It then not so subtly shifts to a generalization so broad it sweeps all before it: “[O]pposition to Zionism often is expressed in ways that are not simply statements of disagreement over politics and policy, but also assertions of prejudice and intolerance toward Jewish people and culture.” And so on to the inevitable coup de grace: “Anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and other forms of discrimination have no place at the University of California.”

In a few paragraphs, the report conflates two distinct phenomena: hatred of Jews on the one hand, and criticism of a political ideology on the other. The overall claim is that the latter -- objections to the Israeli state, its military occupation, its demolition of homes, its two-tiered system of citizenship -- is the new, covert form of anti-Semitism. These are issues regularly debated in public discourse; it is imperative that they be freely discussed in universities as well. But if the report is adopted, scholarship and teaching that include critical perspectives deemed “anti-Zionist” could be branded illegitimate, and open discussion shut down.

All forms of discrimination must be opposed, including anti-Semitism, but this report is neither inclusive nor balanced in its representation of how racism operates on our campuses. In an age of unprecedented Islamophobia, Arab and Muslim students have suffered overt prejudice and repression of their views, yet the document makes only passing reference to their experience. It is less interested in actual conditions of intolerance that we all must oppose than in singling out and redefining anti-Semitism to include political viewpoints that it seeks to suppress.

If the report is adopted, scholarship and teaching that include critical perspectives deemed "anti-Zionist" could be branded illegitimate, and open discussion shut down.

The report is merely the latest manifestation of a well-funded and increasingly desperate -- even panicky -- political campaign to eradicate criticism of Israeli policy from American campuses. A compelling student movement for Palestinian rights has emerged, as have a proliferation of Jewish voices distancing themselves from traditional Zionist narratives and affirming the Palestinian right to self-determination, freedom and equality. Not coincidentally, the focal point of this campaign has been an attempt to get universities to adopt a widely discredited State Department definition that collapses the distinction between criticism of Israel and hatred of the Jewish people.

Although the UC report claims the need to track “the evolving nature of anti-Semitism,” what needs to be tracked instead is the drive to hijack, for malign political purposes, the definition of a genuine scourge. Ironically, by persistently misidentifying anti-Semitism, the promoters of this politicized new definition will, like the boy who cried wolf, make it more difficult to combat the real thing when it occurs.

Whereas the UC working group met with individuals and institutions unconnected to the university who have been promoting this redefinition of anti-Semitism, it seems to have made no effort to find balance by consulting the many scholars of Zionism, anti-Semitism and the question of Palestine on UC's own faculty, relying instead on a sophomoric dictionary entry on of Zionism.

And the report was produced under a cloud of external pressure by, among others, UC regent Richard Blum, who publicly issued a veiled threat: “My wife, and your senior senator” -- Dianne Feinstein -- “is prepared to be critical of this university,” unless UC finds a way to punish the supposed new form of anti-Semitism.

The report is as bad as it sounds. Its adoption would be catastrophic. It would be a travesty to let UC become a place where censorship triumphs over the pursuit of truths, however uncomfortable some may find them.

Little here has changed least of all the crows divebombing
the speeding cars on the Ave don't they know it's Holy Week
Then let the sharp Oceanview March wind tread our ears
I to you turn with tiny dumbo weather-tears starting
later the weird thought memory  you insubmarine tango bar
Old Edgethrow roaming the questionable waterfront
who to wedlock this wonder wedlock brought not enough
enough to stand up to the numerousness of years expecting

each be other’s comfort kind but then life happens

always the same almost forever feeling sometimes merciful
sometimes binding close sometimes falling apart

My tribute what I experienced in one week in Idomeni: image via Andrej Isakovic @iandrej. 24 March 2016

When you lookup on Wikipedia you get the following description: Idomeni is a small village in Greece, near the borders with the Republic of Macedonia. The village is located in the municipality of Paeonia, Kilkis regional unit of Central Macedonia. But in the history books it will be remembered by human suffering.  For the past three years, and especially since September 2014, this global drama called migration has unfolded in Idomeni, on the border between Greece and Macedonia. The victims are refugees from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Morocco, Somalia… Their odyssey was halted in this forgotten place in Europe. I’ve spent only one week photographing all those people at a makeshift camp, but I will remember this for my whole life. -- Andrej Isakovic

back early maunderings
upon the idea of death, plain and simple, or
cosmetically clothed in familiar
ritual mollifications of
an ordinary uncanny or uncanny
ordinary, in which everybody lived
but only for a while... Then later
God would be there, positioned on a sort of dais
made of blue vaporous cloud
or else simply upon something large and vague
and your childish mind would be ever alive, wondering
what kind of lounge furniture do they have in heaven
a cloud, awash in a soft spray of golden
yellowish light... God-light... perhaps extending a hand
or more likely ignoring your presence
as though you hadn't really died
yet, but were just being treated to a brief
preview of the festivities, which for that
matter didn't really appear to have anything festive in them
certainly no creaturely joy or solid colour or sweet wild song
for without the material world, how
throw together a halfway decent festivity?
Is there no change of death in paradise?

When they roll away the stone, does light pour in?
Are there, like... snacks?
The idea of death
in the mind of a child
is an idea wasted on an unformed mind
way back when, in the pre-world
before imagination died
God would be there, in that spray of golden
yellowish light
coming out of a bright mist of cloud
through which one might walk
or fall...  that wide water
without sound
but for the soft calls of the wood doves
beside a pool in Palestine
along the Perkiomen,
the deer coming down to water,
the quail uttering their spontaneous cries
as Jesus walks off
with Pontius Pilate and Pontius Pilate's dog
into the stars, on a beam of light
but are these memories or dreams
or the mere last blurts of the imagination of the child
from under the pillowcase
in the moments of forgetting
something important, what is it again?
... what is there left to believe?
He walks with me and he talks
with me and he calls me his own
as we walk out into the cosmic dark
on the broad beam of light
across that wide water without sound

A very painful picture of a lifeless body that is buried under the sand of Garabulli beach east of Tripoli, Saturday, March 19, 2016

The more painful part is that this lifeless body was added by the Red Crescent to another 11 lifeless bodies saved in death bags on the beach since last Friday March 18th, as there wasn't any legal department responsible for the burial ceremony.

The Red Crescent mentioned that the death fridges in Tripoli medical center were ruined and the central hospital's death fridges are full, therefore those lifeless bodies couldn't be saved anywhere.

It's probably leading to a real disaster as the number of the lifeless bodies is expected to be increased by the coming days which will lead to spreading the diseases in the area.

The Red Crescent wasn't able to put all the lifeless bodies in death bags.

In addition it's very painful that those people couldn't find a place to live in when they were alive or a place to be buried in when they have passed away.

As it turns it picks up  an accelerated

Suns rage
And suns rage,
Days want sun,
Sun wants bright,
Night wants shade,
Dead queens graves,
Down I sat,
I sat down,
There I sat,
I sat there,
Straight I saw,
I saw straight,
I did look,
Look did I,
Bright they were,
They were bright,
Still I gazed,
I gazed still,
Two stars then,
Then two stars,
Appeared there,
There appeared,
Eyes she had,
She had eyes,
This was she,
She was this,
Suns rage
And suns rage,
Days want sun,

Byron (Trials of Transportation)

We crossed paths often in the same late hour
At that fearsome death corner on Colusa -- Byron alone
Rigid intent fierce determined tough in all weathers
Independent beyond anybody ever known
Resistant to outside influence other than that of his exacting God
Infinitely vulnerable totally blind ever since long ago Bible College

Hermit Byron
Pathetically girded in the night
For heartstopping expedition down the Ave to Safeway
The Lord's own stifflegged wooden warrior marching ever onward with
Crash helmet kneepads dark goggles in mysterious shadow world
Backpack for groceries long white red-tipped stick
The lance of a Uccello footsoldier
Poking out ahead hesitating

To listen before launching within permanent dark
From tiny traffic island perch mid torrent
Into insane traffic stream crossing without seeing never seeinganything
Since losing his sight completely long long ago
While at Bible College
Furious headlong in purpose as a man possessed by inner vision

Against the light in face of mad oncoming bumping into curbs into
Parked cars falling getting up undaunted plunging on readjusting course
Inner navigation flaw errant repeated correction path providential
Zigzag
Through shapeless yet tangible unknown
Traffic pandemonium

As if unstoppable... Byron the blind guy not getting killed
In a series of impossible miracles managing
To escape all dangers
Without ever knowing they were there
Rushing directly toward him
At that most lethal corner surviving somehow all these years...

Byron the nocturnal somnambulist
Byron the evangelist
Byron the dogged foe of the forces of atheism in their several guises
Byron the hermit Byron the blest interrogator Byron the ever unappeased
Byron the obscure scourge of a crazy grim Lord...

The trials of transportation
For the old are continuous yet variable by degree and for none ever more acute
Than every day for Byron the blind isolato
A walking collection of bruises in boots uncomplaining

...Then
One morning last month at the Gilman Street Amtrak level crossing
Byron marched out onto the tracks toting a trash bag
En route to the recycling center
Just as a silent-running UP commuter train came along
Oaktown to Sac Martinez Division
And separatedByron from one of his feet...

At Highland they sawed off the rest of the leg and there
Attended by nobody but the ICU nurses
After two and a half weeks Byron finally slipped
Out of the too bright world he couldn't see
Into the permanent darkness he'd always known was out there
But could never see coming

At night, above the street, the colors of the bushes and the trees, repeating themselves
in the semaphore flashes of headlights approaching, far then near, then fading back into black,
create an argument with the moving shadow of each passing car in the glass, as the largest trees rustle and sigh in the night wind,
and in the space between branches where a star would be, were there stars, all you can make out is the aftertrace of
departing visitors carrying away with them their life concealed in memory, in absence there is
nothing to be sad about, therefore you must be sad tonight about something else
but why be sad when you could be young and full of anger about everything that made you what you are.

At night above the street the colors of the ruined trees
repeating themselves in the flashes of headlights
no interval wave after oncoming wave of cars
approaching far then near then fading back into black
perhaps perhaps perhaps
                                      this must be the place
where the gentleman with no pants said he lived
in absence there is nothing to be sad about
in presence there is nothing to think about
but why be sad or think about anything
or be alive and old in any of this alone or with others
when you could be young and full of anger
about everything that made you what you are...
or not

Tommy Bartlett's Pancake and Pizza Restaurant, Lake Delton, Wisconsin. Photographer's general caption:  "Near the town of Wisconsin Dells the Wisconsin River channels through deep, soft sandstone cliffs, cutting rock into fantastic shapes. These natural splendors have given rise to a booming tourist industry. People come in droves, often in campers and trailers. Boat trips, shops, bars, and diversions of every kind vie for patronage in an amusement complex extending 2 or 3 miles beyond the town.": photo byJonas Dovydenas (1939-) for the Environmental Protection Agency Project DOCUMERICA, September 1973 (US National Archives)

Yellow Olds with 1970 Iowa plates so hideously familiar
you put me in mind too abruptly of cheap summertime duckboat adventures
trawling back through soggy years to that halcyon epoch
when all it took to inflate the heart with a bilious rush ofexpectation
was the mere thought of a weekend of relative abandon at the Dells

The hibbing of those vipern lorke that quann
Hither sometimes sinne steales and staines
The silken sad uncertain rustling in the thousand
Wreaths of dangling water-smoke of each borble quartan
Sweet Fido at my feet curled like a quarled willow
Upon the wild sea-banks an waful wuv moved wivver
Smooth cartage from thy chamber

TURKEY - First aid officials carry a migrant in Dikili after his deportation from Greece. By @Ozannkosee #AFP: image via AFP Photo Department @AFPphoto, 8 April 2016
......................March 1988

when a spirit comes to me
  and frightens
and the weight on my chest
  turns butterflies into desert lands
and rivers flow through
             arms to heart
shepherds and farmers sit to drink
my isolated soul,
but not because I'm away
from you or may never see again
  the drunken night
      or shaking star's illusion
  that distance is not time
  and time not space
but the spirit comes to me

Joseph Ceravolo (1934-1988): "When a spirit comes to me..."(March 1988) from Collected Poems, 2012

The mountain-summits sleep, glens, cliffs and caves
Are silent -- all the black earth's reptile brood --
   The bees -- the wild beasts of the mountain wood;
In depths beneath the dark red ocean's waves
Its monsters rest, whilst wrapt in bower and spray
Each bird is hush'd that stretch'd its pinions to the day.

UNHCR statement on violence on the Greece-FYROM border on 10 April

Press Release, 11 April 2016
(This statement is attributable to UNHCR Spokesperson Adrian Edwards)

Yesterday's violence at the Greece-Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia border near Eidomeni and the extensive scenes we have all seen of teargas in use are a matter of great worry to UNHCR. It should be too for all who are concerned with Europe's response to the situation of refugees and migrants.

Time and again in recent months we have seen tension unfolding at various European borders, between security forces on the one hand and people fleeing war and in need of help on the other. People get hurt and property is damaged. Harm is done to perceptions of refugees and to Europe's image alike. Everyone loses.

In recent days media and public attention has focused on how the EU-Turkey agreement is being implemented in the Aegean islands and in Turkey. We should not forget the many other refugees and migrants who continue to be affected by the situation, especially the nearly 46,000 on the Greek mainland who arrived before the agreement took effect. At Eidomeni, about 11,000 have been sleeping for many weeks now in the open in dismal conditions, fuelling hopelessness and despair.

UNHCR is ready to support the voluntary transfer of people to sites to be put in place by the Greek Government, including helping with the necessary services while registration and processing is taking place. This is urgent. In the meantime, in Eidomeni, UNHCR together with the Greek Government, Greek NGOs and other partners are providing food, medical support, help for persons with specific needs, and prevention and response to sexual and gender based violence.

A wider solution -– namely to relocate those who may qualify for international protection to other European States –- has been agreed for many months. It needs action.

Violence is wrong whatever the circumstances. UNCHR hopes Europe will take the necessary steps now, and we stand ready to help governments further in fulfilling their obligations to refugees.

Along those roads we cannot hear him bark.
