Diversion (Fireboats working in the inner harbour, middle of the night)

The bumping of the boats' wooden hulls against the dock

made me think of eyeballs bobbing up on the other side

of the paywall, popped open by pins to expose the little

wiggly bits of eggwhite eyeball gunk that swim about in there

beneath the pier, agglomerating into clots that pick up tangled strands

of plastic junk and seaweed to become semi-solid

floating blobsbanging against the pylons when the tide turns.

Is it the contrite looking girl she's angry with, or is it us?
And are we suffering from global amnesia, or is it merely wilfully local
and related to all this smoke and inability to confront reality
and bound to clear up within a few days, maybe weeks
and is there anything that's really important to remember anyway
or is it not like what happened when Jane's husband wandered off, if that's what he did,
is it possible our best hours now are those in which we are allowed
to wander off, and when we return will we know
who the girl is angry with, or why, or whether it still matters
or ever did, or ever did?
