Nonverbal Space. Ginza, Tokyo.: photo by Shin Noguchi, 5 March 2017
Nonverbal Space
"Nonverbal Space" is unstable, distorted, and contradicts what we have created. And [Ma], exists in there. The characteristic of the Japanese [Ma] is very beautiful, also delicate, and if you are not always aware of the very small amount of undulation of [Ma], it loses balance immediately.
I tried to listen to a lump of invisible voice (or the voice that was confined) of [Ma] existing in nonverbal/unstable spaces of our daily lives, and I aimed to visualize the two invisible elements, [Ma] and human [Gou] (karma/conduct) that underlies in [Ma]. Also, in this project, I dared to express the human being as the existence (visualization of [Gou]), not as an individual but by making the whole nonverbal space the subject without including people in the frame. This way, I am managing the awareness of the relationship between individuals, society and the surrounding environment for the viewers.
Danshi Tatekawa said that "Rakugo is an affirmation of human [Gou] (karma/conduct), that is, inconsistency", and Alexander Pope also said that "To err is human, to forgive divine". As they talked towards "people", could their words really be said in front of the "Nonverbal Space" which is more closer to the "society"? and could that "forgiveness" recreate another type of hope or a new possibility in this land where everything had changed to something that looks irreversible? I shoot the "Nonverbal Space" (it is unstable, distorted, and something contradicts what we have created) while being aware of their words which were created by human beings as well.

Something Here/Sorry, You'll Never Walk Alone. Shibakoen, Tokyo.: photo by Shin Noguchi, September 2014, posted 5 March 2017
Something Here
People are living life desperately. Sometimes lonely, sometimes helping each other, sometimes crying, sometimes laughing. I capture people going about daily life because there are moments that they themselves do not realize are more beautiful and full of human touch than the carefully choreographed movies of Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini or Shakespeare's plays.
I attempt to visualize Mark Twain's words "Truth is stranger than fiction", and prove that it is true as a visual language in photography that: fantasy moments where children show, and hope and possibilities for the future; adults are running on the society time semi-forcibly, but still, they show individual strength sometimes painful, and sometimes fun; and the moments can see their footprint they lived in.
I want to share these beautiful moments with other people and, at the same time, I want them to understand that extraordinary moments exist in our daily lives and that they can happen anywhere and at anytime.
"I'm here, just here. You're here, just here. There is something here, something beautiful something special. It may last but a moment, but we are always connected to each other. I want you to feel that, when you see my work. You are not alone. There is always someone in the world keeping an eye on your struggle."
Sorry, You'll Never Walk Alone
Being aware of their own lonely existence, people do not even have time to look at the real figure of themselves through mirror, while they are not able to afford to see the appearance of others that can be comparable either. In order to adapt themselves into the society as well as to become a cog, people are leading their daily lives frantically.
The photographer is trying through this project to send a message of "you are not alone at all. There must be someone in the society keeping an eye on your struggle for living", in addition to which, it is attempted to express both sides of a socially ironic message as "There is no time for being lonely in this constantly vigorous society. It is even impossible to walk streets with nothing in your hands".
I wish you could feel the "contradiction" between the nature of human being and the essence of the society created by human beings, not through the aforementioned commentary, but from the appearance of people in the photo who are living frantically in the realistic world.
